Human settlements are entering an era of unprecedented transformation driven by environmental uncertainty, technological change, and evolving societal expectations. While urban renewal has traditionally focused on regenerating buildings, infrastructure, and public space, the challenges of the twenty-first century require a broader ambition: reimagining how people, places, and environments continuously evolve together.This keynote introduces Design Intelligence as a new paradigm for shaping adaptive human settlements. Rather than viewing design as the creation of static objects or places, Design Intelligence cultivates the dynamic relationships between human creativity, artificial intelligence, environmental knowledge, and collective intelligence to enable continuous learning, adaptation, and resilience. Digital twins, immersive environments, AI, and emerging technologies become catalysts for more responsive and meaningful places, rather than ends in themselves.
The keynote argues that the future of human settlements will not be defined solely by physical renewal, but by their capacity to learn, adapt, and enhance the well-being of both people and the planet. Urban renewal, therefore, becomes more than rebuilding cities; it becomes the cultivation of future living.
