Description

Following a project that included textile-based soft robotics to create haptic stimulation, we implemented 3D-printed techniques to support and augment stimuli. The textured surface is 3D printed with resins on a fabric, activated through soft robotics underneath. The result is an organic multi-textured surface that moves simultaneously and stimulates the body. While previously the focus was the portability and the autonomous use of the device by people with motorial impairment, the actual job focuses on integrating the textile with a patterned texture that could improve the stimulation and emphasize the inflatable movement.
The work comprises three main parts:
A) An Alcantara suede cover with a 3D printed resin multicolour pattern modelled through a parametric algorithm that emphasizes the underlying inflatable chambers. The protruding reliefs develop from the shallow profile and minimal diameter of the peripheral areas of the design, where the inflation is absent, towards the central sections, where the inflation reaches its peak. In those areas, the small humps reach their maximum diameter and height.
B) A heat-sealed sequence of compartmented inflatable chambers that constitute the pneumatic actuator of the device. Each section inflates following a predetermined sequence that mimics the flowing of a continuous path toward the centre of the device.
C) An Arduino board controls the electronics and pneumatic devices connected to the soft robot through silicon tubing.
