Description

Drawing inspiration from China's manned space missions, the student project "Symbiosis Protocol: Cosmic Escape"—a virtual experience integrating escape room mechanics, dark ride elements, and augmented reality (AR) technology—won the first prize (undergraduate category) at the national finals of the 2026 China College Students Mechanical Engineering Innovation and Creativity Competition (Amusement Facility Design Section).

The project, created by Zheng Xuetong and Huang Shutian from Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University's Design School, was supervised by Dr. Zhang Cheng, Senior Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, and Dr. Song Yang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture. Based on China's actual manned space missions, the work features an "immersive dynamic" virtual reality amusement ride, with its overall appearance drawing partial reference from the design of China's Tiangong Space Station.
