Description
Museums are crucial in preserving cultural heritage and providing educational experiences for diverse audiences. China has over 6,000 museums, with 90% offering free admission to the public. Approximately 85 million individuals in China, or 6.5% of the population, live with disabilities. While some museums provide basic accessible facilities, there is an urgent need for comprehensive improvements. Despite significant advancements over the past three decades and the enactment of over 60 laws and regulations protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, this community continues to face substantial social and economic barriers. A notable gap persists between policy and practice, particularly in education, where support for students with disabilities remains inadequate. Globally, museums increasingly embrace inclusive practices and serve as agents of social change. In 2024, UNESCO, supported by the UN Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD), launched the "Accessible Museums for Persons with Disabilities" project in China. The Chinese Museums Association (CMA) partnered with UNESCO to identify and showcase innovative accessibility measures across Chinese museums, encouraging sharing policies and practices that enhance access for diverse groups. In collaboration with local organizations and students enrolled in IND403, Suzhou Silk Museum conducted research using surveys and observational studies to assess the museum's accessibility. This paper presents the research process and outcomes, including the design of multisensory displays, such as tactile silk displays with audio descriptions, and accessible interactive installations. Three students will implement these innovations during an upcoming internship, contributing to the museum's ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and inclusivity, fostering social inclusion and engagement.
