Description

We live in times of technological revolution. AIs are beginning to form a part of our lives, and this dichotomy between traditional architectural working methods and digital ones is becoming a challenge. This is why the School of Architecture at XJTLU (Xian Jiaotong Liverpool University) and the School of Architecture at UNNC (University of Nottingham Ningbo China) have chosen to experiment with incorporating both approaches into architectural education methodologies. This two-day workshop, specifically designed for first and second-year students, is not merely an exercise in skill development; it is also a pioneering endeavour aimed at redefining the balance between tradition and the future.

The ‘Nature and Technology’ workshop will involve the creation of physical models made from vegetables, which will subsequently be transformed using AI software into inspirational images that ill be use in an hypothetic future project. The workshop will be structured in two phases. Firstly, the ‘nature’ phase, where students will study vegetables (their structure, fractal nature, modularity, etc.) and build physical conceptual models representing the initial concept of an architectural project for a free program. This will encourage students, as has traditionally been the case in architecture, to draw inspiration from natural forms when designing structures. In the second phase, students will manipulate photos of their physical models using AI software to turn them into inspirational images of their potential architectural projects. Finally, students will draw by hand a draft of a floorplan and a section of their project.

Thus, the workshop promises to shine a light on the future of architectural creativity. Students will not only engage with cutting-edge tools and methodologies but will also partake in enriching debates, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

Through this workshop, we aspire to a future where architectural designs are not only sustainable and adept but also deeply connected to the very essence of our natural surroundings.
