Description
Using micro-level data from traditional tenured researchers (who have "iron rice bowl" or bianzhi) from 1980 to 2019 in China, we examine the effects of university-level tenure-track implementation on these researchers and its propagation through their knowledge production networks. Using the generalized Difference-in-Differences estimation method, we find that implementing the tenure track at the university level significantly reduces tenured scholars' publications. Moreover, the tenure-track shock propagates in the network and negatively affects the first-order coauthors’ publications. In addition, it reduces the total coauthor size, the number of coauthors from elite universities, and the number of new coauthors. Overall, our results shed some light on the propagation of tenure-track shock and its greater impact on the knowledge production network.
