This talk traces the presence of the Grand Canal in the historical maps and scrolls that depict the varied scenery and every life in Suzhou. Drawing on these historical representation and interpretation of water, including rivers, lakes and water networks in both urban and rural areas, the historical perception of the Grand Canal in Suzhou is delineated through the lens of historical cartographers and painters.
