Tourism industry, one of pillar industries in China’s economy,is heavily ravaged by the long-lasting covid-19 virus pandemic. Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China states the income of domestic tourism fell by 49% in 2021 from 2019. When onsite travel is limited, many tourism destinations such as the Palace Museum and Dunhuang choose to design and develop online virtual tourism with the application of digital technologies including 5G, VR and AR to attract tourists. Through a field work in Suzhou, this research intends to explore the development of local digital cultural tourism, find out whether digitalization provides new opportunities for local cultural tourism and how to realize that.
