Description

he preferred method for solvent removal in the chemistry laboratory is using a rotary evaporator. A rotary evaporator, or "rotavap" is one of the most commonly seen equipments in organic chemistry laboratories. Rotavap is essentially a reduced-pressure distillation device that can fast complete the removal of solvents. Qian's group has established the method of conducting acetal synthesis (a dehydration process and the removal of water is needed) from benzaldehyde. This reaction is much faster and greener compared with the conventional "Dean-Stark-Assisted dehydration". This SURF project aims at exploring more types of condensation reactions (such as the removal of water, MeOH, or EtOH) using a rotavap.
