As a design revolution in the new century, nonlinear architecture has demonstrated its potential to become the new architectural stream. Many examples of nonlinear space in the campus buildings emerged giving rise to the thinking of whether the spatial nonlinearity of campus interior communication space can promote the interaction between students. Through case studies of two typical nonlinear architecture, the nonlinear characteristics of campus interior nonlinear communication space were summarized from three aspects, space unobstructed itself, the complexity of functional connections with surrounding spaces and variety of visual connections with surrounding spaces. Furthermore, to investigate the relationship between spatial nonlinearity of campus interior communication space and students’ interaction, a spatial vitality evaluation framework was established by observation, behaviour mapping and interview. After applying this evaluation framework to the nonlinear interior communication space on the south campus of Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University(XJTLU), the results show that different types of communication activities have different requirements towards communication space. Researches also show that a communication space that is unobstructed and has a variety of functional connections with surrounding space will promote leisure communication activities. Hence, the nonlinearity of communication space will only promote specific communication activities rather than the overall spatial vitality of the space.Period | Jul 2021 |
