Description

This paper recounts the architectural design strategies employed in cultural and creative industries which helped contribute to their success, as well as the impact on industrial heritage in strategic locations in China in the past twenty years. In order to answer these questions, several methods were employed, such as historical reviews, policy reviews, and architectural case studies of some of the most successful cultural and creative industries in China, including  M50, 1933 Shanghai, and 798 Art Zone. The results revealed an obvious interest of the Chinese authorities to use cultural and creative industries as an urban regeneration strategy. It also confirmed the importance of cultural and creative industries in environments such as abandoned industries which tend to be conducive to artistic and creative activities. This research emphasises that abandoned districts may still be renewed through appropriate design strategies, policies, and creativity. It also demonstrates how urban development and heritage conservation can be reconciled within contemporary urban architecture.
