Description
During its long life cycle, architecture changes and is influenced by the times. In cities in China, many once-abandoned sites of industrial heritage are currently being adapted, which has attracted the attention of social media, a new product of the 21st century. The literature documents some renovated buildings that have entered the social media scene and therefore become widely known. To determine how renovated sites of industrial heritage can be given a new lease on life through social media platforms, this thesis analyses which renovation methods in two case studies of industrial heritage and how social media have impacted those buildings. Based on an analysis of photographs of the cases on social media platforms, the results suggest that people post content about renovated sites of industrial heritage on social media for two reasons. Considering people's curiosity about a industrial heritage is inseparable from the buildings' original features, architects have amplified those features through adaptive renovation and created new spaces for activity to adapt to new functional requirements, bringing the buildings closer to people, thereby realising their social media friendliness. Drawing from those results, the thesis clarifies the practical significance of making buildings with industrial heritage friendly to social media and raises architects’ awareness to pay attention to the social media friendliness of buildings in their future adaptive renovations.Period | Jul 2022 |
