Description
Unlike most other American cities which have embraced high-way and the model of ‘Big-box Retailing’ suburbanization, Boston’s postwar urban planning and design evolved around a series of innovative ideas for street regeneration. This lecture examines three such projects which together have helped redefine contemporary Boston: the Beacon Hill, the ‘Big Dig’ and the recent ‘Boston Living with Water’ initiative. From being simply public thoroughfares for horse- drawn carriages to becoming a part of regional green infrastructure system, Boston's streets are constantly being reimagined in response to the challenges that the city faces at different times. By examining the three flagship projects, the lecture will highlight the significance and the possibility of street design in transforming urban space, economy, culture, and the environment.
