On modelling of abrasive finishing processes with tools of different compliance

The need for complex structural parts with high-precision surfaces and high performance is increasing, driven by the rapid development of aerospace and optoelectronic major assembly fields. As the final procedure of finishing process, grinding and polishing is very important o improve the surface quality of parts and improve service performance. Whether rigid or flexible abrasives are used, different types of flexibility exist in the process of material removal, changing the set motion trajectory, the original abrasive shape or part shape, etc., affecting the abrasive-workpiece interaction. This report analyzes the four different forms of contact between the abrasive-workpiece during the photofinishing process. Namely, 1) the use of rigid abrasives and no assembly gap between each component (no flexibility), 2) the use of rigid abrasives but the assembly gap between the mold and the workpiece (geometric flexibility), 3) the use of flexible abrasives to process rigid workpieces and the elastic deformation of the abrasives during processing (monomer flexibility), 4) the use of flexible abrasives to process flexible workpieces and both have elastic deformation (double-body flexibility). Taking fixed abrasive planetary grinding and shape adaptive grinding as examples, the effects of flexibility on abrasive motion trajectory, material removal and surface morphology were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed, which provided certain reference values for the development of photofinishing processing.
