Meeting Aga Khan Awarded Projects in FilmMISSION STATEMENT:
The Department of Architecture is happy to implement the first steps in introducing the Aga Khan Award for Architecture to our student audience in China. We are delighted to have the support from the Aga Khan Development Network to cooperatively plan a series of events and activities to introduce the Aga Khan Award Foundation and Award for Architecture to our students and further expand the scope and validation of excellence of the award in China. The aim for this collaboration is to build a thread of events which we hope will breathe new life into Aga Khan awarded and commissioned projects. We hope to rediscover through research a multitude of particular aspects of the awarded projects which themselves provide a basis for the projects to be recognized and understood in contemporary ways which are relevant and essentially of value to our local audience in China. This active process will utilize the resources already available and further disseminate them into our education and research at the University.
The short films in this event films are essential to allow our local audience to understand the aspirations and find meaning in the awarded projects. The shortlisted and awarded projects screened in this exhibition represents a small sample of the diverse range of work which continues to be recognized through the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The projects selected critically acknowledge and engage with their context and local communities. The diverse range of projects across continents may allow us to understand the co-existence of multiple world-views. The films allow us to understand the life of building both in the formative stages and post-occupancy as well as the long-term solutions the architects aspire to create. Ultimately these projects exemplify how architecture establishes meaningful positions in rapidly changing environments. We hope this activity and those to come will enrich interdisciplinary conversations on the diverse awarded projects and integrate them into education at many levels.
