Description
The judging of this two-staged process assesses the shortlisted projects of the Suzhou Global Science Park International Competition.Suzhou actively integrates into the global innovation network, insists on cultivating an innovation culture and, vigorously promotes the spirit of scientists, takes the lead in proposing the concept and idea of building a national and international science park. Tiger Hill Wetland Park is the main body that will be implemented to create a Global Science Park. On September 26, the Conceptual Programming & Planning Design of Suzhou Global Science Park International Competition was officially launched.
The competition will give Tiger Hill Wetland Park a scientific spirit and new connotation that echoes the times and integrates with the Qingtai Scientist Village and Qingtai International Industrial Design Village on the north side. Through brand-new planning and design, it will create a new hub for international science culture and tourism experience, a new landmark for advanced science popularisation, a new paradigm of ecological civilisation ideology, and a new scene of technology and art integration. Ten Million bonus calls for global design elites to join to create a national and international science and innovation landmark.
This project aims to leverage the Tiger Hill Wetland Park and surrounding areas at the junction of three districts as the core, integrating the northern Qingtai Scientist Village and Qingtai International Industrial Design Village with the southern Huqiu Scenic Area and Gusu Ancient City to create an international, national-level science park. The goal is to build an open and shared innovation ecosystem, making it a globally influential destination for scientific exchange.
Suzhou Global Science Park is a large urban scientific complex centred around Tiger Hill Wetland Park and its surrounding areas, radiating throughout the city with an emphasis on ecological scientific experiences.
The project will not be constrained by existing locational conditions and planning restrictions. With the mindset of "building a science park beyond the wetland and a national park beyond Suzhou," it will creatively construct a "Science + Design + Ecology" integrated science park, considering the specific geographical conditions of each section of Tiger Hill Wetland Park. This will activate various science-related tourism, experiential, educational, and urban events, resulting in a vibrant ecological urban area that closely links with the Shanghai Hongqiao International Hub and aligns with the global flow of innovative talents while integrating with industrial development.
The research scope extends from Guangji North Road to the east, Beihuan Expressway to the south, Huquan Road to the west, and Taiyang Road to the north, covering an area of approximately 59 square kilometres. The surrounding functions include the Qingtai Scientist Village, rural revitalisation area, industrial park area, industry and city area integration, Huqiu Scenic Area, and residential living area, showcasing diverse functionalities.
The design area extends from Yongfang Road to the east, Sucheng Avenue to the south, Jinghu Expressway to the west, and Central North Line and Huayuan Road to the north, covering an area of approximately 9.8 square kilometres.
The design task of this International Consultation will include three parts: Overall planning, Environmental planning and spatial design, Scientific device concepts and experience design.
1. Overall Planning:
Breaking through the existing planning conditions of the Tiger Hill Wetland Park and its surrounding areas, a pioneering, breakthrough, and all-round conceptual design is carried out for the Science Park. With the integration of science, science popularisation, ecology, and life as the direction, the main content sections of the Science Park are creatively proposed and deconstructed into a series of distinctive spatial scene carriers, creating an ecological science experience destination with future gravitational effects.
2.Environmental Planning & Spatial Design:
Breaking free from the limitations of the current situation of the Tiger Hill Wetland Park, strengthening the connection with future urban functions, deconstructing the main content of the layout in the overall planning into about 10 distinctive spatial carriers, proposing landscape space solutions with rich experiential value and destination effects, selecting and focusing on no less than three important building units or groups, and carrying out spatial form conceptual design.
3.Scientific Device Concepts & Experience Design :
Combining overall planning and environmental planning, select three important nodes for scientific installation concept and experience design with a strong theme, uniqueness, and feasibility. At the same time, it has certain urban community function settings, technical feasibility, material and structural reliability, and sustainability.
This project invites planning organisations and design companies with internationally leading standards in urban-themed park planning, large-scale landscape environmental planning, waterfront environment design, and art installation design to participate in the competition.
Participating organisations may register independently or form a consortium of no more than three entities. The participating units require members with similar planning achievements. The chief designer responsible for the planning and design proposal must oversee the entire design process and personally participate in site visits, relevant evaluation presentations, and further development work.
Regardless of whether registering independently or as part of a consortium, participating organisations must provide evidence of relevant experience or achievements that meet at least three of the following criteria:
Lead or collaborate on the overall planning or area redevelopment for World Expos, national garden expos, or science theme parks.
Demonstrated achievements in planning large-scale urban landscape waterfront environments.
Recognition with authoritative international awards in design or creative fields (at least three times).
Achievements in completing iconic temporary buildings or installation art at art festivals, biennials, or large urban events (at least twice).
Validated capabilities in feasibility studies, research, and market data analysis.
