Guest Advisor for an Article Collection on “Urban Regeneration and a Sustainable Built Environment”The concept of Sustainable Development has been proposed for nearly 40 years ever since the Brundtland Report. As the theme has largely shaped the national and international policymaking, particularly in the realm of urbanism, more and more global cities attempt to achieve their SD goals by means of urban regeneration. Urban regeneration is a rehabilitation process that aims to enhance and transform the built environment for a high-quality development pattern, leading to a better use of spaces, improved performance in regional economy and social innovation. It is also believed that urban regeneration provides critical opportunities to promote the living standard and well-being of the residents, increase energy efficiency and build stronger resilience to climate extremes.
As urban regeneration holds the key for developing a sustainable future, the challenge to bridge its theoretical knowledge and implementation is enormous. It is instrumental to continuously explore and summarize the latest trends, experiences, effective practice, and research outcomes in the field so that more thoughts may be stimulated and knowledge disseminated to a wider scope.
This article collection initiative aims to encourage research publications on the topic of “Urban Regeneration and a Sustainable Built Environment”. The call may include but not limited to the following subtopics that are related to or as a result of urban regeneration: sustainable urban forms and mobile networks; innovation in urban planning and design; revitalization of decaying neighbourhoods; renovation of old residential communities towards age-friendly standards; low carbon approaches in development control; human comfort in public open spaces; climate resilience and mitigation strategies; digital and new technology for decision making; preservation of historic urban context and cultural heritage; urban ecosystem optimization; social and economic issues of urban transformation; urban governance and public participation in place-making; and any other relevant subjects. The focus is how urban regeneration can be used to steer the built environment towards sustainability. Contributions from theoretical reflections or empirical studies based on practical work are all welcomed.
