Description
This interactive workshop introduces a decolonial approach to climate education, critical for bridging the rural-urban divide in the Global South. Traditional climate education often lacks contextual relevance for frontline communities (Fernandez et al., 2014), hindering effective climate action. Drawing from my ongoing research in the Southeast Asian region, I propose to demonstrate how AI-enhanced gamified learning offers an innovative, scalable solution. The workshop’s methodology adapts the popular "Climate Fresk" framework (Climate Fresk, 2018) by integrating generative AI (GenAI) into localized, culturally sensitive game-based experiences.The workshop's primary purpose is to empower participants with practical methods for developing and implementing such initiatives. Attendees will engage in a condensed "Climate Fresk" micro-session , experiencing how it fosters understanding of complex climate mechanisms. We will then demonstrate, through visuals and examples, how GenAI can personalize and contextualize climate content, making it directly relevant to diverse local ecosystems and cultural nuances. This hands-on segment will illustrate the co-creative potential of AI in empowering communities to collaboratively identify and address their specific climate challenges (Kieu et al., 2024).
Instructional techniques will blend brief presentations, experiential learning, practical demonstrations, and facilitated discussions, encouraging active participation and critical thinking. This innovative approach offers a unique fusion of technology and pedagogy, directly addressing the urgent need for accessible and engaging climate education in underserved regions. It represents a significant scholarly contribution by challenging Western-centric knowledge production, advancing decolonial methodologies in education, innovating EdTech applications for the Global South, and providing a transferable model for equitable climate literacy, ultimately fostering global climate leaders from the ground up.
