Application of Project Based Research Through Design(RTD): Design of Modularized Air-purifying Respirator

Activity: SupervisionMaster Dissertation Supervision

Description

This dissertation explored how to do modularized design on the traditional respirator products through the practice of RTD (Research Through Design) to see whether the experience of using the air-purifying respirator(APR) can be improved through the modularized design. Modularized design is considered a safer effective way to optimize products, which has it’s specific advantages for users and manufacturers. The main purpose of this dissertation is to explore the modularized design method and product design process to innovate the existing APR products. At the same time, this dissertation divides the whole process of design and research into independent parts, and clearly shows how modularized design is combined with the traditional design process, and gets an APR product with better user experience at last. Finally, through the comparative test, it can be concluded that modularized design is able to help air-purifying respirator products to improve their user experience, and also reflect the advantages of modularized design that integrate different functions of product into modules, to complete module exchange through common interface to enhance the convenience and comfort of products. At the end, this is a meaningful attempt for product practitioners and academic researchers who will having further study.
