Description
China has been systematically protecting heritage buildings since the 1980s. Authenticity was introduced from abroad as an important evaluation criterion in this process, and it has been reinterpreted in China. As a historic city, Suzhou has advanced experience and achievements in the protection of heritage buildings. The solutions to authenticity in the Suzhou experience are largely different from the protection of heritage buildings abroad. By reviewing the discussion on the authenticity of the protection of domestic and Suzhou heritage buildings, authenticity has been given different meanings in the process of localization: including but not limited to the lives of local residents, choices for more valuable historical periods and style restoration. However, these methods are difficult to have certain repair standards. Therefore, the constraints of relevant local laws and regulations are particularly important. Clearer repair techniques and procedures are mentioned in the regulations. The implementation of important responsible persons makes the responsibility of protecting the building no longer limited to the government. Finally, through case study, it is found that the original valuable historical information is respected in both functions and materials in actual operation. The biggest challenge of authenticity is still the lack of legal protection that does not highlight the architectural heritage itself to pursue new functions and retain authenticity in actual operations.Period | Jul 2021 |
